Miron Zownir is a German-Ukrainan documentary photographer whose work has consistently examined social ruptures and marginalized lives for over four decades. Known as the "Poet of Radical Photography" - a term coined by American author Terry Southern - Zownir has developed a distinctive and uncompromising visual language rooted in street photography and long-term social observation.
Beginning in the late 1970s, his work emerged from the streets of West Berlin and London and later from New York City, where his photographs of subcultural life in the 1980s established his reputation as one of the most radical documentary photographers of his generation. Across decades, Zownir has remained committed to documenting zones of social tension, collapse, and transition, focusing on those living at the margins of economic and political systems.
His international projects have addressed humanitarian crises and social upheavals in cities and regions including Moscow, Ukraine, Turkey, Romania, Italy, Canada, and the United States. Zownir’s photographs confront viewers with realities often excluded from public visibility - approached with courage, respect, and an uncompromising honesty.
